IRI’s Weatherford: Strong Relationship between Consulting an Advisor and Retirement Confidence

10.24.2012

IRI Research Shows that Gen-Xers Who Work with a Financial Advisor Are More Confident in Achieving Retirement Security

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) President and CEO Cathy Weatherford today delivered good news for younger and middle-aged consumers who have become discouraged by the daunting task of retirement planning. Her message: working with a financial advisor helps. Weatherford cited a recent IRI research report that found that nearly 48 percent of Generation Xers who consulted a financial advisor have high levels of confidence that they will live comfortably throughout retirement, compared to less than 29 percent who have not.

Weatherford said advisors have a lot to bring to the table, as many consumers, particularly younger consumers, do not have considerable knowledge when it comes to retirement planning and managing investments. According to IRI research, 45 percent of Generation Xers report they are "not very" and "not at all" knowledgeable about investing in securities.

Weatherford's remarks were presented during a webinar on retirement options for Generation X and Generation Y consumers. The webinar was hosted by A.M. Best and sponsored by AXA Equitable.
