WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Insured Retirement Institute issued a statement from President and CEO Wayne Chopus on the retirement announcement by U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.).

“Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) announced this week that he will retire from the Senate at the conclusion of this session of Congress. Senator Cardin is a long-time leader on retirement security policy and a two-time recipient of IRI’s Champion of Retirement Security Award.

As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Cardin has a prime position to influence retirement policy. In doing so, he has been relentlessly bipartisan in efforts to forge consensus and enact workable solutions. This approach is a significant reason for our nation’s incredible advances in improving employee access to workplace retirement plans and facilitating lifetime income solutions over the past four years.

These bipartisan efforts produced two major retirement laws in four years – the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act of 2019 and the Secure 2.0 Act of 2022. Today, millions more workers and retirees are positioned to achieve a secure and dignified retirement because of these new laws.

Senator Cardin’s legacy will undoubtedly include his advocacy and leadership for policies to help America’s workers and retirees relieve their growing anxiety about their futures during their golden years. IRI and our members are very grateful for his efforts, leadership, commitment to retirement security, and service to our nation. We wish him well in his next chapter.”
